For Parents

During the forty-plus years I’ve worked with young children and parents I have learned to distill my guidance and customize techniques so that parents can create a unique recipe for nurturing their children. When I offer parenting advice, I make it clear that while I know a lot about children and development, parents are the experts on their own children. I work toward facilitating each parent’s plans and actions to promote their child’s development and behavior. As a therapist and teacher, I want the child to understand his or her own pattern of thoughts, feelings, and actions and make choices that help them get along in their world. My therapeutic approaches include Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Collaborative Proactive Solutions (CPS). I have an extensive background in partnering with parents of newborns, including fussing babies. Techniques such as infant massage and sleep training are methods I teach. Check out my YouTube channel for “quick tips” series of parenting videos and videos for parents and children to watch together.

For more information on Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), please check out the website at the link below. The first step in investigating PCIT for you and your child is to set up a parent appointment with Dr. Blackwell to discuss your child’s needs and assess the best intervention.
